Since we opened our doors, Myoptic Optometry has donated a portion of our exam fees to 4 charities. We’re going to post on each of these, to help explain why we love them so much. Today’s feature: Mercy Corps.

Mercy Corps turns crisis into opportunity for families in some of the world’s toughest places. Mercy Corps was founded in 1979 by 2 friends, Dan O’Neill and Ellsworth Culver, and is now based in Portland.

They are fast and good, and the agency consistently ranks as one of America’s most effective and efficient charitable organizations. The 2010 Haiti earthquake hit on Tuesday Jan 12th; Mercy Corps was there on Thursday.

Today, Mercy Corps is helping 19 million people recover from disasters, build stronger communities and find their own solutions to poverty. Since its founding, Mercy Corps has provided $2.2 billion (yes, billion!) in assistance to people in 114 countries. Over the last five years, more than 88 percent of their resources have been allocated directly to programs that help families turn crisis into opportunity in some of the world’s most challenging places.

Check out their great site: www.mercycorps.org. And thank you for helping them through Myoptic!
