OFB distributions of emergency food topped 1 million in 2011

A portion of the fees from every eye exam at Myoptic Optometry is donated to a charity of your choice. This blog post spotlights the Oregon Food Bank. How many kids in Oregon would you guess experience at least occasional shortages of food? 1 in 100? 3 in 100?

Surprisingly, the answer is 30 out of 100. That’s a quarter of a million kids in Oregon with “food insecurity,Ć¢ā‚¬Ā which affects their growth, school success, and psychological development. Oregon ranks #1 in the United States for food insecurity.

The Oregon Food Bank is dedicated to eliminating hunger and its root causes. They serve as the coordinators for 20 regional food banks and 915 agencies and programs working on the problem of hunger in Oregon. Last year they distributed 81,000,000 pounds of food to Oregonians. That’s a lot. 34% of those receiving this emergency food aid are children.

Besides handing out food, the OFB also fights hunger through advocacy, nutrition education, learning gardens, and public education.

Thanks for supporting them through Myoptic Optometry!
