Guideline for your child’s vision care

School-Supplies-Kids-Glasses

An early eye exam is extremely important to ensure that kids have the proper vision, muscle strength and depth perception to succeed in school. They may not know they are not seeing the way they should and may not be able to communicate any struggles they may be having with their eyes.

According to the American Optometric Association, infants should have their first comprehensive eye examination at 6 months to rule out any misalignments, health issues or significant prescriptions that could affect development of their visual acuity.
Kids should be checked again at age 3 then again before they enter the first grade.
Blurred vision, eye strain or discomfort can make it challenging to pay attention and cause frustration for the child and the adult.

Here’s what a proper eye examination will involve:

Testing of distance and near vision
Binocular evaluation to make sure the eyes work well as a team
Eye movements in all directions
Focusing skills, both strength and flexibility
Peripheral awareness
Comprehensive health evaluation

Here’s what a proper eye examination can prevent:

Poor school performance
Poor athletic performance
Poor attention
Amblyopia (lazy eye)
Serious health issues that could lead to blindness or worse
Headaches and fatigue
